Oasis Gun Club--Nevada

The Oasis Gun Club in Mesquite, Nevada, is nestled just over the hill from the Palms Golf Club on 1,000 acres of beautiful wilderness. With sporting clays, trap, skeet, and the increasingly popular game of ZZ birds, the club has attracted 280 annual members who pay a minimal $40 for membership. This attractive deal gives them two free nights at the Oasis Hotel and Casino, a two-for-one buffet, and 10 percent off rates at the golf course and spa. For sporting clays shooters, those Oasis patrons who director Steve Williams says tend to be an upscale group, a lot of doctors and lawyers and professional people, Mesquite has become a major attraction and a permanent fixture on their vacation calendar.

The 15-year-old Oasis facility, which has undergone significant improvements and upgrading in the last year, holds an annual End of the Trail shoot each October and a Silver Buckle shoot in February. Gun rental, ammo, and clothing are available year round in the 3,000-sq.-ft. clubhouse, and lessons are available by appointment throughout the year.

Plans are in the works for a ZZ bird competition, which will offer a huge cash prize for any shooter who can shoot 30x30. "We expect to draw shooters from as far away as Europe seeking that big prize, Williams says. "Our busiest months are October through March. That's when the snowbirds are heading south from the northwest and Utah, and they are drawn here by all the other attractions in Mesquite."

The Mesquite community, just an hour north of Las Vegas, has exploded in the last 15 years from a no-stoplight town of less than 900 residents to over 12,000. And with an attractive climate that features over 300 days of sunshine a year, the gun club stays open all year and offers great shooting in an unequaled setting, along with all the other diversions and attractions the area has to offer.

Gambling is also an option for shooters at the club. Oasis Hotel and Casino, which owns the gun club, not only has a terrific selection of table games and slots but also offers gourmet dining and a world-class spa. One shooter-gambler from Montana last year took part in one of the autumn shoots at the Oasis Gun Club and left with over $5,000 in blackjack and dice winnings. My crap shooting was even better than my trap shooting, he said with a wink. When I come to the Oasis, Id rather be lucky than good.

Id say that maybe 30-40 percent of our shooters also play golf, said Williams. But the people who come here usually dont bring both their golf clubs and their gun. They typically have only one thing in mind. Oasis Gun Club, (800) GUN-CLUB; www.oasis-resort.com
