Later, with the introduction of the model 680 over-under, this receiver type was further refined. Not long therea fter, Beretta introduced the 682 series. Since then, the company''s position with shotgunners seems to get more solid every year. If you peruse the current Beretta catalog carefully, you''ll have a hard time counting all the different models, all based on t he same lock design to the receiver, the many and various 682, 686, and 687 models. The exceptions would be the DT10 models and SO series, the se with the modified Greener crossbolt.

Many over-unders continue to depend on the full-width underlocking lu g, such as the Browning Superposed and Citori, for the basic lockup of their system. Wit h the 680 series (current 682, 686, and 687 models), Beret ta takes a much different approach to their lockup system. Not only is there no underlocking lug, the front of the receiver is completely closed off (save for the firing pin holes), effectively pr eventing powder burn crud from getting back into the trigger and other moving mechanisms behind.
