Walker River Resort Sporting Clays—Nevada

By John Steinhorst
Page 8 of the August 2007 issue

Western Nevada’s Walker River Resort features two state-of-the-art, automated sporting clays courses with highly visible and diverse target presentations. The courses are abutted on the north side by undulating hills and steep ravines, while the scenic West Walker River flows to the south. Shooting stations are set among natural sage, bitter brush, and willows. The courses have a great array of terrain, varying from the low valley to desert gulches and from small canyons to sloping hillsides and ridge tops hovering 50 to 250 feet above stations. The white sporting clays course was established in 1998, and the green course was completed in 2006. Each is a mile long, encompassing several hundred acres and 12 stations. Green 11 closely resembles ducks settling in from above the stand. White 10 includes a standard target going away from the shooter and a mini flying 50 feet overhead. A 5-Stand is also set up for novice shooters, including right-to-left, going-away, incoming, and overhead targets. More experienced shooters are sure to be challenged by the chandelle target. The 5-Stand is an entertaining location for warm-up games, and a wobble trap for Custer’s-style shooting is also available for groups. The full-service Walker River Resort boasts numerous cottages and RV sites for guests. The club also hosts numerous sporting clays shoots throughout each year, such as the EMT Benefit Shoot in September, with participants of all levels of shooting ability welcome. At Walker River Resort Hunting Preserve, hunters can enjoy the riverside fields for pheasant releases and the high desert for chukar hunts from Oct.-Feb. Excellent fly fishing is available right at the resort and throughout Wilson Canyon. Visitors can take a day trip into the Sweetwater Mountains just south of the resort or ride 12 miles to the ghost town of Ludwig for a fun outing. In the evenings, the resort’s cliff-side lounge has live entertainment with spectacular views of the large sandstone bluffs to the east. Walker River Resort Sporting Clays, 1 Hudson Way, Dept.
