Hill 'n Dale--Ohio

Page 10 of the July 2002 issue

Hill ?n Dale Club, located 40 minutes south of Cleveland, Ohio, was opened in 1954 and is a private club, although it hosts many NSCA tournaments throughout the year. The sporting clays course was designed by Gordon Phillips and built in 1990. The wooded portion of the course offers many challenging shots using the natural terrain of many gullies and small ponds. There are also some stations located along open field strips bordered by tall pine trees that have served as hunting fields prior to the sporting course being built. These stations offer some longer target presentations, including some from the 50-foot tower.

There are currently 18 stations on the course, with over 30 different presentations at any time. Targets are set by club employees, led by Jeff Cook and Mike Coudret. A and B courses have been set for varying degrees of shooter skill; the A course is more challenging, while B is still not a cakewalk. The course is changed at least once a month to offer new presentations on a regular basis.

The club also offers 5-Stand, skeet, and wobble trap. Many different membership options are available, including a clay target membership for $825 a year. The rate for sporting clays is $16 per 50 targets and $28 per 100 for members. Instruction is a vailable from NSCA Level I Instructors at the club along with periodic visits from John Woolley, Jim Arnold, and others. Along with regular safety protocol (eye and ear protection mandatory), the club has an automatic external defibrillator (AED), and all staff is trained on its use, CPR, and first aid.

Hill ?n Dale has recently finished construction of a new shooting lodge where shooters, hunters, and fishermen gather before and after their activities. The building has a conference room, large lounge area with fireplace, pro shop, library, and snack counter. The pro shop offers Beretta guns for rental, golf cart rental, ammo, and safety supplies. Clothing and shooting accessories from Wild Hare, Boyt, and McAlister are also available. Behind the new b uilding is a new 5-Stand, where shooting can be watched either from inside the comfort of the lodge or outside on the back porch. A barbecue grill is in use during the summer months in this area.

Hill ?n Dale holds a registered class shoot on the first Saturday of every month, with flight times of 9 am and 1 pm. During the summer, annual shoots include the Northcoast Classic, NWTF Mid-America Cup (Regional), and the Hill ?n Dale Charity Shoot. The club will host the Ohio State Championship August 2-4, where over 250 shooters are expected to participate in all the events.

Activities at the club are numerous. Besides sporting clays and other clay target shooting, the club offers upland hunting for pheasant, chukar, and Hungarian partridge. There are a lso 12 ponds on the property that are stocked with game fish, including trout, walleye, bass, crappie, and perch. Lodging is available at the main clubhouse for eight adults, and the club chef frequently prepares meals fit for a king for members. Many pic nic pavilions and campsites are located throughout the club. A rustic log cabin is also nestled in the woods along one of the lake shores, available for overnight stays.
