In 2004, Steven Asman started a company with the idea of designing comfortable and functional eye wear. As the owner of Gustbuster umbrellas, which manufactures the popular umbrella used on the PGA tour, he planned to head more than just a standard sunglasses company because opposite of the weather, he could control his own destiny. Asman also wanted to keep the same employees who provided excellent customer service, which was an important component in his business model. The company was already working on eye wear for golfers to enhance vision on the green, so it made sense to transition into the fastest growing outdoor sport—shooting—whether it was sporting clays, trap, skeet, or pistol. And so SunBuster Sport Enhancement Eyewear was born. “I hired a designer from another eye wear manufacturer, a shooter himself who understood the importance of having the correct colored lens for various lighting conditions shooters experience in target presentations,” states Asman, president of SunBuster. “At SunBuster, we manufacture Sport Enhancement Eyewear that helps you to ‘see better, shoot better.’ We’ve made numerous design upgrades, which ultimately provided additional comfort to shooters being able to wear our lenses all day while giving them greater versatility in selecting colored lenses to wear. We’ve also designed a patented, lightweight rimless insert, which sits behind the lens, available in a wide range of prescriptions. So in essence, you have the flexibility of five different-colored lenses with your prescription remaining in the frame.”
The company designed its ShootCorrect sunglasses systems specifically and individually for clays shooting and hunting. The Pentachrome lens system features five ColorCorrect lenses specially designed for the shooter. It offers five of the most beneficial colored lenses to enhance and maximize performance under all different lighting, target, and background color conditions.
“Our design team at SunBuster is always looking forward in growing the line,” stresses Asman. “We actively test new products with our shooting experts of various disciplines. I’m not a guy who sits idly by; my creative mind is always thinking of improvement and design changes to augment the shooter’s ability to break birds or acquire more Xs.”
SunBuster is now successfully creating its own niche in the shooting industry. World-class sporting clays competitors, champion pistol and rifle shooters, Olympic coaches, and members of military shooting units are making the switch to its products due to the complete shooting kits offered. The input from top-level shooters is reflected in the product design and every elegant detail. Nose, ears, cheeks, and head size of a person are all meticulously factored into the design and fit of each frame. These quality frames are lightweight enough so shooters can comfortably wear the glasses all day long.
“As an innovator,” says Asman, “I know how to design great products that offer my customers terrific value, quality, and they have to be affordably priced. I’m proud to state SunBuster has a very small return rate, which relates to all of the field testing we do before bringing the product to market…. I’m constantly seeking ways to identify the market, which has many components, so I can offer more to my loyal customers. Competitors have been around since the ’70s. It takes time to properly build and grow a company along with its reputation, and SunBuster, while being a small company, is achieving noticeable growth.”
Gaining access to the many disciplined well-known shooters, the company began to develop a trust with them to introduce its product. The features and benefits that SunBuster offered, such as comfortable fit, distortion-free lenses with the anti-fog coating, and water-repelling properties, appealed to all users. Once shooters became aware of the affordable kits and numerous upgraded lens colors, eventually word of mouth spread from shooting ranges to pro shops.
“When we were able to attend our first SHOT Show in Orlando,” remembers Asman, “we had the opportunity for the industry to get to know us and eventually attract professional shooters who rely on quality products to deliver winning results. A few years ago, SunBuster attended the World FITASC Championship as a vendor, and we were amazed by how popular our dark lenses were with the many competing Australians. We had our corporate office overnight an additional shipment of our upgraded dark lenses, which eliminate eye fatigue and strain often experienced Down Under because of their bright lighting conditions.
“Our sales team is constantly opening accounts at various pro shops catering to shooters of all disciplines. Our product is sold at L.L. Bean under a joint brand, in addition to retailers who focus on the sporting clays customer or outdoor enthusiast. SunBuster seems to have its own underground network of loyal followers. Many travel around the country, competing at weekend shooting events, sharing the benefits of our product, and then we seem to be busy the following Monday or Tuesday at the office.”
Perhaps most beneficial to securing its place in the future of the shooting sports, SunBuster offers a unique discount program nationally to all scholastic shooting athletes to obtain SunBuster’s Sport Enhancement Eyewear five-lens shooting kits from its corporate office. The company has made it very easy for head coaches to visit its website, where they’ll find information posted in a blue banner marked “SunBuster’s Scholastic Eyewear Program.”
“SunBuster is committed to our corporate philosophy,” insists Asman. “In order to grow the shooting sports and recruit new shooters, we must look to our youth. By providing these athletes with affordable and necessary equipment, they’re now able to experience safe and responsible handling of firearms in a team-oriented sport that ultimately will become a lifestyle for many. Shooting programs throughout the country help to develop character, leadership, and safety awareness, which SunBuster strongly supports.
“What SunBuster is most proud of is our involvement in supporting the many young men and women ambassadors within the shooting community. I know that the sport’s future lies with them, and it’s what I think most about—ensuring they have proper equipment to maintain what has become a family tradition.”
