I have just purchased a lightly used Beretta 685 field grade in 12Ga. - my first O/U. Does anyone have any knowledge of this model and its suitability for clays? There is very little post on the internet regarding this model.

The 685 was a short-lived addition to the excellent Beretta 68x series. It appeared only as a field model, without the bells and whistles of a sporting model (longer barrels, thicker stock, generally heavier, extended chokes). I believe the barrels were ported - are yours? The 685 was discontinued in 1986.
As for suitability for clays, if it fits, you like it and it shoots where you look, then it's good for clays. It's a Beretta 68x, so parts and people that know the gun are going to be easy to find. It might be a little light for 200 shots/day, but that can be adjusted if necessary.

My barrels have not been ported, and are configured as F/M 28". I've been prowling Cole Gunsmithing's website, perhaps I could have another set of barrels fitted. It would appear that the barrels are interchangeable between the different frame sizes.

Beretta does not produce "extra" barrels, but you can always hope to find barrels that other folks have parted off their guns for whatever reason. Another option would be to have screw-in chokes installed, for far less than another barrel set and fitting would cost.
