just shot my first round ever! i got a 56/100 at selwood in alabama. i was using an old remington pump 20guage. now my question should be obvious...

what do you suggest for me? details price range - up to 1000 dollars, hopefully a lot less body type - 5'10" 230lbs male

i am really interested in getting involved. so i dont care about engraved or the wood type. i just want to be able to shoot (the pump malfunctioned on 8 targets).

thanks in advance tylerp

First place I'd start would be the Beretta AL391 Urika. It's gun of great reputation and unsurpassed quality in the semi auto market. They can be found in the 850.00 range - 1100.00.

After that, I would consider the Browning Silver or the Remington 1100. Maybe even a good used gun can be found that meets your needs.

Most quality pumps are less yet.

Just make sure that you buy quality the first time around. No sense in wasting money on a piece of crap, when spending a few hundred more can get you to a quality level that will last....especially if you plan to shoot a long time into the future.

In shotgunning there are a few exceptions...but by and large, you get what you pay for.

from the looks of it those are all semi's. so is there something that makes them better than o/u? it looks as if breaking the o/u down after every 2 shots would get tiresome? are they better? i am just saying i see a lot of pictures of them....

thanks again tylerp

Plaz pretty much nailed it. You're not going to beat the 391 in that price range. I would suggest one of the target versions over a field model though. The target models have a wider rib, usually a mid bead and beefier stocks than the field.

GOOD LUCK!!

thanks...

well i got a 391 on the way, but i also bought a used browning citori o/u. it is nicked and roughed up a bit, but seems nice. it fit and shoulder like a dream. i may not know what is "right" but i think i felt it.

in 2-3 weeks i plan to take a day off and on shooting a case through both.

i'll let you know thanks again

WOW. Great set of purchases you made there. If the Citori still functions great, then the dings are no matter. And if it does work well, along with a new 391....well, you just bought a smart pair of guns to get into shooting with. Good job. And congrats.

thanks.

i am really happy with both of them. i'll keep yall updated.

One more question. I got a lot of chokes with my purchase for free, but everyone tells me to just shoot one mainly. so shooting that one - should i get that comp-n-choke? and what choke size? are they really that much better?

thanks tylerp

Comp-n-Choke chokes work no better or worse than any other brand, regardless of the advertising hype. Put a LtMod or IC choke in your 391 and IC/Mod chokes in your Citori and don't think about changing them for at least a year. You have a lot to learn about reading target presentations, gun mounts, etc. Chokes are way, way down on the list of important things when it comes to hitting clay targets... and stressing over them is a sure way to slow your progress.
