On my last batch of reloads I switched powders from International Clays to Longshot, just for the heck of it. The lightest load recipe I could find for 12 gage was for 1 1/8 oz and produced 1430 fps but only 9100 psi. You can load 1 1/8 oz up to 1585 fps at 10,000 psi. If you guys like smokin the birds, you can literally do it with these loads. They just turn to smoke. They would probably be good for long range shots or games like Annie Oakley. On the down side the lightest recipe calls for 31.7 gn of powder so you can only load about 218 shells with a 1 lb can. Also, they kick like a Missouri Mule. All reloading books warn against deviating from published recipes. I wonder why I couldn't just reduce the powder charge to tame it a little bit, but will check it out with my reload supplier/trainer before trying that. I'm going quail hunting tomorrow but will not be using Longshot loads. I'd rather eat the meat than the feathers.

Dear sir, in my opinion longshot is strictly for hunting purpose only. The reload data call for heavy powder and screaming feet per second(f.p.s). It isn't economical for shooting target. Also as you mention the recoil is harsh. Citox

While that may be true for the 12 gauge, it is VERY useful for the 20, and really has its virtues for the 28 gauge. Most of my reloading for these gauges is with Longshot, and the loads are excellent.

All of the local ranges here spec nothing more the 3 1/4 dram loads. I'll bet you've exceeded that level and wouldn't be allowed to use those. One range has banned game loads and will inspect your ammo. I suspect they've run into problems since the leaves are off the trees and the shot is going to places it shouldn't.

If it would put more birds in the bag at the end of thre day I would say ,go for it,unfortunatley up to this point Ive havent seen anything that can beat just being a good shot. Heck I know a guy whose hunted with a 410 his whole life and one day I asked him why...well he said this single shot 410 makes me be a better shot and it keeps me being one,hes a good shot and always has his birds. People buy semi auto's at thier first sighting of a huge covey of quail...go blasting like Audey Murphy and still miss them. Then they soon realize its still going to be one shot at a time. I think we feel the same when we see turbo charged ammo...but in the end its still about the 3 basic's proper shoulder mount, following through with the swing and keep on practicing. I use heavy field load 7 1/2's with 3 1/4 Dram 1 1/8 oz shot and I do fine....at 1255 FPS...
