Hello to All, This is my first post here. I apologize in advance if it's a little long. The last time I shot clays was over twenty years ago with my uncles double trigger o/u. On my first pull I blew both barrels. It kicked my butt. I still had a great time and always wanted to get my own o/u and go again...just never did.

Got the itch again now and started looking into guns. My first thought was go with the Ruger or Browning but couldn't really justify the price to start something I had not done in so long. But then I saw the Mossberg Silver Reserve. I thought this is such a good looking entry level o/u for $499 I could get the 12-ga and for some versatility, (and the wife) I could justify getting the 20-ga also. So i did. I'm still in my 10-day waiting period here in Ca. So I've had a lot of time to read gun forums. A lot of people seem to have great tips and advice and seem very knowledgable about their favorite guns, ammo and chokes. As well as being very opinionated about the ones they would never own. Which is great but when it comes to the MSR's I've read so many negative things about this particular gun (not sure wether they shot one or not) that I'm wondering if I should bail on them before I take posession.

I think it started with "It's a mossberg...needless to say it's a lemon" And on about broken firing pins, Dents in the lower chamber seemingly caused by improperly retracted firing pins (guns fault?) Crude turkish manufacturing processes etc.

I understand that it is not actually made by Mossberg but imported from "Khan" and looks basically like the Arthemis Model which was rated as one of the top guns of 2003 by American Rifleman magazine! So whats the deal?

I would love to hear from some people who "Actually" own and/or fired any of these Khan's or MSR's . Any serious problems. Would you buy one again? Thanks for your input. Dan

DeGriz, While I do not own a Silver Reserve. I do own 2 Mossbergs and am very satisfied with them. I too have heard the "it's a Mossberg, need I say more" negativity. But for what it is worth...just disregard that.

The gun as you know is not MADE by Mossberg so maybe that is not totally applicable. But the point is that argument should be meaningless to you.

I think the bigger issue is that the Silver Reserve can be expected to function as well and as reliably as any O/U in the price range. So if your choice is to opt out of the Silver Reserve and get a Condor or Spartan (or similar priced import)instead... the same good/bad press and opinions can be had for any of them.

If you like it and it fits what you can justify for your budget, then go for it. Seems to me its 6 to one half dozen the other.

Just getting started is the important thing and congrats to you on that point. I think the question is what do you really want to shot and what price you want to pay. I have purchased some inexpensive guns, but it's not what I wanted and I ended up purchasing what I wanted and bandishing the expensive one to the gun safe. I'd rather save a little and buy what I want then to buy something just because it was low priced. Good luck and BE SAFE.

I bought my son one a couple of months ago, he loves it and has had no problems with it. When you get it make sure you break the barrells all the way until you hear a click, this resets the firing pins. If you don't it will not fire. I assume that once it's broken in this will not be much of a factor. it's a great value for the $477.00 I gave at Wal-mart for it.

DeGriz, Just a word from an old retired gunsmith. Before you even put your new guns together clean them good and lube the hinge pins and the front end iron where it rubs on the receiver. Also put a couple of drops of oil on the top lever where it goes into the receiver. Also put some on the extractors where they run in the monoblock. The last thing you want to do is gall the steel on a new gun by opening and shuting it dry. I have seen guns in dealer racks that were never lubed and just from people looking at them and opening and shuting them have galled the steel. I wouldn't buy it. This usually happens in places like Dick's where the workers just take one out of the box and put it on the rack. Good luck with your new guns and be safe !!!!

Thank you all for your advice and recommendations.

As far as good gun lubricating products, can I expect to find everything I will need in a good cleaning kit? Or will those need to be purchased in addition.

Any product or kit suggestions? I've seen the cleaning kits that have a vise to hold the gun. Do these work well for O/U's Thanks

My neighbor just purchased one this last Friday. We went out yesterday and shot 100 targets , not a problem with it at all. Worked flawlessly. I shot it once, and it almost seemed as if it had less felt recoil than my Browning. I have to admit, for a $499 gun, I was impressed. Nice tight metal to metal fit, good weight. I'm considering adding one to my arsenal.

Even buying a good gun cleaning kit, you do have to purchase a good gun grease to put on the hinge pins, locking lugs, etc. of O/Us to minimize wear. There are several good ones out there, so I won't specify a brand.

Bought one in 12ga., have put 2000 rounds through it thus far, no problems. Yes, it's a low end gun, but it works for me. Wish I knew what other brand thumb chokes will work in it.

Thanks for the follow-up. I thought I would you to let you know about a choke tube site I saw.

It is http://www.trulockchokes.com I have not used this brand but think I will try them. This is the only site I have seen that lists choke tubes for the SR specifically by name.

I have also seen somewhere on a post that the Beretta/Benelli style tubes are interchangeable with the SR’s but I cannot confirm that.

I have Trulocks for several brands/models of shotgun and they are excellent. Here is their interchange list and if you scroll down through it you see that the 12 gauge SR interchanges with the Benelli/Beretta chokes. http://www.trulockchokes.com/interchange.htm

Hope this helps

I have just purchased a Silver Reserve 410 and have shot 3 boxes of AA's to date. No problems of any kind - everything works as required.

However, there may be a problem with the air quality at my local Skeet/Sporting Clays Club. It seems like the air may be responsible for directing the shot away from the target, which resulted in several missed targets.

I also realize that three boxes is not a test. Again, so far-so good.

I purchased 2 Mossberg Silver Reserves, consecutive serial numbers, one for me, and one for my son. We've shot about 100 shell though both of the guns. My son's started double firing(one trigger pull-one barrel immediatly followed by the other)not soon after mine started to do the same thing. We sent them back to Mossberg today.

At the local range they have 5 Mossberg Siver Reserves in 12 ga. which they rent for trap and skeet. They are only 2 months old and had to be sent back for repair as all 5 had broken firing pins in the top barrel position.

Well haven't heard that one before. Any idea if they were they consecutive serial numbers?

Maybe it was the Air Quality at your range ;-)

I bought mine in Aug. 2005 and have shot the heck out of it. Doves, quail and chukar all fell to it. I've used all varieries of shot and loads and all worked well. For the money you can't beat it. 100's of shots later and never had one malfunction!

Seriously Scott, If you have not purchased the Silver Reserve yet Go to Dicks Sporting goods and look at a Verona LX-502 O/U if they still have any. If you can find one buy it instead.A much better value!

I still get a kick out of the guy who posted here awhile back and said he really liked Dehaans service...yeah he only had two problems. 1) The new Dehaan o/u was 12 inches off between barrels 2) a metal rib fell off..ah heres the original post by Mudcat

"I have owned a U1 model for several years. DeHaan has provided really good service on it also. The first problem involved regulation on the barrels, which means that top barrel shot about 12 inches higher than the bottom. He replaced the gun. The second problem involved the side ribs coming off the gun, which was sent back to the factory. The gun came back better looking than original because they blued the barrels. They have pretty good value for the money and have recieved good reviews from the gun experts on SC Magagzine and another European magazine, which I can't recall the name."

Sometimes the owners themselves say it best...once a Huglu always a Huglu...I know I said I had quit trying to enlighten the impassioned budget gun owners but this is just too classic.

After owning a Mossberg 590 and finding it to be near perfect in all aspects, I purchase my 12g silver reserve. That was a couple years ago. Right away it would fail to fire about 5% of the time on either barrel. Sent to Mossy for repair. Came back and did the same thing. Sent it to Mossy again with a note that said either fix it or just keep it. They sent it back after repairs and I have had no problems since. It patterns well and POI is POA. It is a nice gun now but I have little confidence in it after all the failures. So I just shoot trap, skeet, & 5 stand with my 590 now. Besides, it is fun to see the look on the other shooters faces with their $3000 guns while shooting the same scores with my "street sweeper" gun.

This will be my 3rd season hunting with my 410 silver reserve and I really like it.Unlike a lot of the hi-price 410's,the mossberg is a true to scale 410 frame, not 410 barrels hung on a 20 gauge frame as most are.It is slim and well balanced, and comes up to my shoulder like a bird gun should.I have put several hundred 3 inch shells thru it without a problem.I let my buddy hunt with it last season and he killed the first quail he pulled up on with it.He bought one this week. You will have to look very hard and pay a lot more for a compareable 410 o/u with a real 410 size frame.
