Gentlemen, Having spent some time investigating on an average pump action for duck hunt (with 3 1/2 chamber), I have converged towards two models, i.e.: 1) Browning BPS Camo 2) Benelli Nova Pump I like the BPS a lot but the Nova seems ok and cost cheaper. Any comments on these guns. Also, is the 31/3 chamber that relevant? Or does the extra charge really help with steel shots?
Thanks, JL

Both excellent. I prefer the BPS because of bottom ejection and the person in the blind appreciates the fact he isn't having a 3 1/2 in shell thrown in his/her face. Also consider Itahca, although it's only 3 in. I don't use 3 1/2 shell for anything, but my pump and auto are chambered for them, just in case I wanted to. Ithaca has a good article on why they don't sell 3 1/2 on their web site. Good luck and be SAFE.

If you want a nice pump. I would recommend a Mossberg. Most bang for the buck in the pump world.
(This oughta be good)

I'm with you on the Mossberg. I shoot an 835 because I "wanted" a gun for 3 1/2's. Now that I've shot 10-15 in a day all I shoot is 2 3/4 and 3". Go figure, but I still love my 835. Now thats all I shoot. Best money I've ever spent

I agree Mossberg is a big bang for the buck. I choose the BPS though, for looks and the bottom ejection. I was also really surprised at how silky smooth the action is right out of the box. I too have not used 31/2's yet, but like the fact that I can if I want to.

Good choice. I have two BPS and purchased them for about the same reasons you stated. I've never had a better pheasant or quail gun. The gun is good for trap and skeet, although the shooter is the big problem. Keep it clean with a light oil cloth and it will look like new for many years. Have fun and be safe.

I have a Benelli Nova Pump and if you want a kill'n machine you should try one of these. I bought mine for $350, it has a black synthetic stock with 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 in. shells. It also says DU Unlimited with the logo.

Either are good buys and the prices are similar in my "neck of the woods". My preference is the BPS because I have been shooting them for a number of years and never had a problem and they certainly get the job done. Good luck and be safe. prm

Must be loosing my mind. I think I responded to this forum three different time!! Well at least I said the said think, almost. I guess there may be a reason I own 3 BPS. There's something to be said for consistancy.

Thought I'd share this link with you. Biased? Maybe but it doesn't cost anything to look. http://www.charlesdaly.com/html/products/firearms/shotguns/maximag/maximag.asp
I know of many geese who've met their end with these.

You can't go wrong with a Rem. 870 in 3.5 at Wally's world for $298.00

I disagree. You can go wrong with the 870 now-a-days. Someone mentioned in a previous thread that Remington's quality control in the mass produced 870 Express line is leaving a tarnish on the previously unflapable 870. This is somewhat due to the Express line's components being machined of "more economical" materials than the 870 Wingmaster, Marine, and SPS models, in an effort to keep the price of the gun competitive with other manufacturers with low priced pumps. The result is a higher volume of warranty claims in these models.
While I am a real Remington loyalist and still believe the 870 to be the quintessential America Shotgun, I simply don't agree with a statement like "you can't go wrong with" the 870. Maybe if you said the, 870 SPS or 870 Wingmaster...
I just think that is too broad a brush to paint the whole 870 line.
For 300 dollars, I would think the Benelli Nova is worthy of consideration along with the Express.

I've known four differnt people that didn't make it through one whole duck season before they sold off there 870 3 1/2's because they jam too much.
I've personally owned the Nova. They kick like a mule, especially w/ 3 1/2 turkey loads.

I'm glad to see so much interest in pump guns, as they are my favorite for hunting. I've never found a pump that didn't kick substantial with 3 1/2 in. magnum or any other gun for that matter. Ithaca makes a good arguement that a 3 in. is all that is needed and they also make an excellent gun. I personally use primarily a Browning pump and yes it does kick with heavy loads, although I seldom use many heavy loads. Turkey usually one or two at the most and less than 10 with geese or other water fowl. The only time I have had a jam with any pump is when I pumped it too slowly. It is quickly remedied by taking off the barrell and sliding the shell out. I agree that all 870's are not created equally, but if you want to go hunting and have minimum funds it is still a good buy as is the Nova. Winchester also makes an excellent pump. Have fun and BE SAFE.

I have had substantial problems with the Winchester 1300. For what it is worth, I agree the Nova may be the way to go. But I forgot about the Ithaca. Great guns! If you go with an 870, get the wingmaster or SPS series.
