Primland Resort—Virginia
By John Steinhorst Page 6 of the July 2010 issue
Primland Resort’s 14-station sporting clays course is a more than mile-long circuit encompassing 350 of this Virginia estate’s 12,000 acres. Completed in 1989, it features a variety of terrain, including woodlands, hills, valleys, fields, streams, impoundments, and unique sites with dense rhododendron understory. Shooting stations and benches handmade from local logs and stone and the natural theme make this course fun for serious targets shooters as well as hunters looking for a wingshooting warm-up from the automated traps. Station five presents deceptive targets below the shooter and many trees. The “charging rhino” incomer can be tricky to shooters who wait too long. Stations seven and nine feature slow-developing clays that reward the patience of those who resist the temptation to mount and shoot early. Station 14 includes a retired duck blind, where shooters must choose breakpoints and avoid the target transition zone on this crossing pair. The 5-Stand with six-trap layout features high and low house, wobble trap, teal, and rabbits from Pro-Matic and IBIS traps. The 22-yard handicap wobble trap and true pair combinations create a fun challenge. Rifle and handgun shooters will appreciate the 50- , 100- , and 150-yard target boards. Hours of operation are Sun.-Sat. 8 a.m. until sunset. Shooting rates are $39 for a 50-target round of sporting clays and $59 for 100, both with cart included, and $15 for 25 5-Stand targets. NSCA instruction is provided for first-time shooters, and Level I and II instructors are available by appointment for $60/hour. Clubhouse facilities include shower, locker room, and onsite restaurant with two dining areas. Primland’s pro-shop supplies loaner guns (Beretta, Remington, and Ruger), ammunition, Club Car Carts with vertical gun holders, and Barbour and Orvis clothing, fishing, shooting, and sporting accessories. The 26-room lodge offers guests casual and refined dining, a golf shop, pub, full-service spa with pool, fitness and games rooms, executive meeting and group meeting facilities, observatory, and a cinema. Other activities include guided wingshooting for pheasant, quail, and chukar partridge September-April. Multi-day hunting packages for whitetail deer and spring gobblers are also available. Guided fly fishing on Dan River and casting lessons are other exciting options, in addition to ATV and horseback tours, hiking, mountain bike trails, and rental bikes and equipment. The Highland Course at Primland, an 18-hole championship golf course, is another popular distraction. From US Route #58, take Busted Rock Rd. Ground service transportation is available from North Carolina and Virginia. Primland Resort, 2000 Busted Rock Rd., Dept. SC, Meadows of Dan, VA 24120; (866) 960-7746; www.primland.com
