San Angelo Claybird—Texas
By John Steinhorst Page 8 of the May 2008 issue
Established in 1993, San Angelo Claybird's two sporting clays courses encompass 185 acres of majestic mesquite trees and thick Texas brush. The challenging 10-station courses present a variety of interesting targets, including tricky tower presentations from 30 and 90 feet overhead. In addition, an entertaining 5-Stand utilizes eight traps, a concrete shooter’s deck, and a covered spectator pavilion. Two lighted skeet fields and five ATA regulation trap fields also add to the diversity, along with a helpful shotgun patterning range. San Angelo Claybird will host the 2008 Texas State Sporting Clays Championship June 26-29, its fourth state shoot since 1997. The club has been an NSCA top-10, high-volume club several years in a row during the last decade, hosting two Zone 6 championships and bringing in different target setters each month for exciting monthly sporting tournaments. The active club sponsors six charity events annually, with up to 500 participants at each event. Gun rentals, ammunition, and supplies are available at the pro shop, and the air-conditioned, lodge-type clubhouse offers a full-service kitchen and large outdoor pavilion. The well-maintained facility is open to the public Wed., Thurs., Sat., and Sun. noon-dark, with reservations and memberships recommended but not required. Members (annual $100 fee) pay just $28 per 100 sporting targets. For an interesting cast and blast, consider nearby Lake Nasworthy and Twin Buttes Reservoir, plus many public and private hunting options in the area. Numerous quality hotels are available within 10 miles of the club. San Angelo Claybird, Duncan Rd., P.O. Box 61211, Dept. SC, San Angelo, TX 76906; (325) 223-1200; www.sanangeloclays.com
