Cody Shooting Complex—Wyoming

By John Steinhorst
Page 8 of the March 2010 issue

Cody, Wyoming, the eastern gateway to Yellowstone National Park, is a small western town named after historical sharpshooter William “Buffalo Bill” Cody. The area’s 360-acre Cody Shooting Complex established in 1986 honors this tradition with a complete shooting facility. Superb shooting venues include bench-rest rifle, blackpowder silhouette, cowboy action, indoor gallery, rimfire silhouette, schuetzen, three skeet fields, five trap fields, sporting clays, 5-Stand, NRA classes, and youth activities. The backdrop of the Rocky Mountains provides spectacular panoramic views over lush valleys and through forests.

The two exciting sporting courses utilize 80 acres of flat terrain, mountain foothills, and steep ravines to create unique and exciting presentations that incorporate towers, battues, chandelles, rabbits, teal, crossers, incomers, and more. All 24 entertaining stations and automatic traps are mobile, and target presentations are changed regularly. Rounds of 50 targets cost $13 for members and $18 for non-members Wed. 5 p.m.-dark and Sun. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Along with holding several NSCA-registered tournaments throughout the year, the highly anticipated Wyoming State Championship will be hosted July 23-25. The Cody Shooting Complex also proudly hosts the esteemed Buffalo Bill Invitational the second week of August and other worthwhile fundraising shoots annually.

Shooting lessons for all levels, including youth and women, are available with more than 80 certified safety instructors, while the clubhouse provides gun rentals and ammunition. Annual membership is $60 per family, and members are granted a key to the access gate, which remains open during public hours. Located just three miles north of Cody on WY 120, turn left on County Rd. 7WC, and the complex is down about a mile on the right. With several comfy motels within minutes of the facility, visitors can also enjoy seasonal big game hunts for elk, deer, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, and antelope in addition to quality wingshooting for pheasant, chukar, sage grouse, ducks, and geese.
